It gives some good snapshots of what the IAF is all about. Of course, it shows only the glamour part here; the hard work that goes into keeping these glamorous machines airborne, and flying for the purpose for which the IAF has been authorised by the people of India can only be sensed.

On the other hand I would love if you would write a piece on why so many pilots take VRS? The Air Chief said there are presently 100 apllications or more for VRS and he mentioned the difficult promotion structure....could u enlighten.

Chrysalis: The defence forces have a pyramidical structure, like every other organisation, but this pyramid becomes very steep as one reaches the higher ranks - there can be only one Chief, at the top. This is not bad enough, but then to maintain the age profile of the services, the people who donot make the next rank have to retire at certain ages, starting at age 48 for IAF officers - this is too young, where you are neither here nor there...kids in high school/ college and still dependent; so, once people finish 20 years of pensionable service (this corresponds to about 40 - 45 years of age), they start looking for opportunities in the civvy street, where they can continue to serve upto age 60 - 65. Pilots had a great window of opportunity during the past about 4 - 5 years due to rapid expansion in the civil aviation and thus most thought it prudent to quit, but this has slowed down now, with the opporunities slowing down outside and better pay and perks in the defence forces, after the sixth pay commission. This is a very simplistic view though.....
